Learn 2 Ride Part 1
Part 1 introduces riders to cycling safety and basic bike handling. We cover the safety check, which should be completed prior to any practice or ride. We also practice how the bikes moves and our goal is to help your rider become comfortable with gliding on their bike while balancing.
To begin, please review each skill and download the PDF guide linked below.
Teach your rider the safety check. Practice 3-5 times.
Practice walking the bike in a straight line, mounting the bike, and tipping to each side with counter steering 5 times. Do this for a total of 5 sets.
Practice gliding on the bike. Set up an obstacle course (see PDF guide for a good format). Complete 5 laps.
Have your rider verbally describe each step of the safety check. Practice 3-5 times.
Practice walking their bike through an obstacle course. Occasionally have them mount and dismount along the course, ideally on different surfaces. Do this 5 times.
Challenge your rider to “fall” on each side 5 times.
Introduce your rider to pushing off with both feet and trying to get long glides. Have them do 8-10 laps of a course.
Have your rider “teach” the safety check to a friend, parent, or toy. Practice 3-5 times.
Set up an obstacle course to include a “crosswalk” and a “crash zone.” challenge your rider to show you their wildest slow motion crash. Do this 3-5 times.
Have your rider show you how long they can glide. Have them do time trials around an obstacle course. 8-10 laps.
